The ADF&G announced the Alaskan snow crab quota for the 2011-12 season will be 88.9 million pounds. This is higher than many observers expected, and marks a likely return to large scale snow crab fisheries in Alaska at the range of 90 to 100 million pounds or higher for the next few years. The market impact, which we discuss in our updated story, will take some months to evolve – as currently buying is strictly hand to mouth, and those holding inventories are not yet under pressure to reduce prices. That situation may change next spring, once the Alaska price has been set and the degree of interest from Japan is known.
